Vidya-Veerta Abhiyan In India

Launched under the supervision of the Union Minister of Human Resource Development (Government of India) Mr Prakash Javadekar as the Vidya-Veerta Abhiyan on the 2nd of May in New Delhi. The campaign started a Wall of Valour in 1,000 educational institutions across the country. In this specific campaign, Portraits of Param Vir Chakra (PVC) a decorated soldier will be displayed at the designated places at educational campuses to instil a sense of nationalism, bravery and to help build a spirit of respect for the real heroes of the country.

During the inauguration ceremony, the portraits of Param Vir Chakra were handed over to the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia, Jammu and IIT Delhi among other universities that have received the portraits.

What is the Param Vir Chakra?

The Param Vir Chakra is the highest gallantry award for officers and other enlisted personnel of all military branched of India for the highest degree of valour in the presence of the enemy.

The award was introduced on the 26th of January 1950, this award may be given retrospectively. Literally, Param Vir Chakra means ‘Wheel (or Cross) of the Ultimate Brave’.

Features of Vidya-Veerta Abhiyan

  1. Universities & educational institutions across the country will have a “wall of heroes”
  2. Portraits of Param Vir Chakra (PVC) decorated soldiers will be displayed at designated places on educational campuses to instil a sense of nationalism
  3. Wall of valour will be15X20 feet in size and will depict the portraits of all the 21 Paramveer Chakra recipients
  4. The idea of having a wall of martyrs in universities was first proposed by a group of ex-servicemen who said portraits of martyrs and tanks used in wars should be put on display in the campus to instil sense of“nationalism” and “patriotism” among the students
  5. During inauguration ceremony, the portraits of Param Veer Chakra decorated soldiers handed over to the Vice Chancellors of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia, Jammu and IIT Delhi, among others, to put it in their educational institutions
