He also worked as a Lawyer and Senior Advocate in Supreme Court of India. He was born on 30 August 1954 in Patna Bihar. His parents are late Sh. Thakur Prasad and Bimla Parsad. His father Late.Sh. Thakur Prasad was a Lawyer in Patna High Court and also a founder of JAN SANGH ORGANIZATION. He completed his Masters in Political Science and Degree of LLB from Patna University. He is married to Maya Shankar on 3 Feb 1982. His wife Maya is the Professor of History and worked as a Lecturer at Patna University.The couple has a daughter Aditi and a son Aditya Shankar.
Ravi Shankar Started his practicing in the Patna High Court from 1980. In 1999 he worked as a Senior Advocate in the Patna High Court. He appointed as the Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India in 2000. He started his Political Career in his college days as a worker of RSS and as an ABVP activist. He became the Assistant General Secretary of the Student Union and also became the member of the Senate of Finance Committee, Arts and Law faculty of the Patna University. Under the leadership of Jaiprakash Narayan, he became the part of the student movement in Bihar. He went to jail when the emergency was declared by PM Indira Gandhi in 1975. He became the National Vice President of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha from 1991 to 1995. He became the member of the National Executive Committee BJP from 1995 onwards. Shankar was elected to Rajya Sabha in April 2000. He became the member of Consultative Committee for Ministry of Finance, and the standing committee on Petroleum and Chemicals from May 2000 to 2001. He became the convenor of Legal Cell of BJP from June 2001 to 2002. He appointed as the Minister of State of Coal and Mines from 1 Sept 2001 to 29 Jan 2003. He gets the independent charge of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting from Jan 2003 to May 2004. He became the member of the Committee on Rules in May 2000, August 2001, and July 2004 to August 2006. He became the member of Human Resource Development Committee on August 2004 till 2006. From Sept. 2004 to April 2006 he selected as the member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. He became the member of the consultative committee for the ministry of finance from 2004 to 2006. From Nov 2004 to 2009 he worked for the sub-committee of University and Higher Education and Human Resource Development. From March 2005 onwards he became the spokesperson of BJP. He was re-elected to the 2nd term of Rajya Sabha in April 2006. He became the member of the Information Technology Standing Committee from August 2006 to May 2009 and from August 2009 to August 2011. From September 2011 onwards he became the member of the Privileges. He became the member of the External Affairs Ministry from Sept 2006 to May 2009. He again became the member of the ministry of finance from August 2009 to 2012. He became the Chief national Spokesperson and All India General Secretary of BJP. In his political career, he became the member of Library Committee, Central Disciplinary Committee, Court of the University of Delhi, Consultative Committee on Finance, Standing Committee on Finance, Business Advisory Committee, Committees on Ethics, Privileges, Consultative Committee on Defence. From 26 May 2014 to 5 July 2016 he became the Minister of Communication and Information Technology. He appointed the Minister of Law and Justice on 6 July 2016.
Ravi Shankar helped the state Goa as a location for the International Film Festival of India. For the Ministerial meet in Durban South Africa, he led the Indian Delegation to the NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT and also led the Indian Delegation in Cannes, Venice, London for the India Film Festivals. A small village Alawalpur in Patna District was adopted by Ravi Shankar for the development under the Scheme of PRADHAN MANTRI ADARSH GRAM YOJNA.
