He is the current Union Minister of Road, Transport, Highways, and Shipping. Gadkari has an Additional Charge of the Minister for RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND DRINKING WATER AND SANITATION. He was born on 27 May 1957 in a Brahmin family in Nagpur Bombay[now Mumbai]. His father Sh. Jairam Ramchandra Gadkari was a farmer and his mother was Bhanutai Gadkari. He spent his childhood in poverty. He had a struggling life to earned for his family and education. He is married to Kanchan Gadkari. They have three children. They have a daughter named Ketki Gadkari and two sons named Nikil and Sarang Gadkari.
Nitin Gadkari completed his M.Com and LLB from Maharashtra University. He also has done Diploma in Bussiness Management. Before joining the Politics he worked as a Lawyer and Industrialist. He started his Political Career in 1976. He joined ABVP- Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad. ABVP is the student wing of BJP. In 1978 he became the secretary for Vidarbha Region. He was appointed as a city president of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha[BJYM] in 1981. He is elected as a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council in 1990 from graduates constituency. He was the PWD Minister in Maharashtra Government in 1995 and in the year 1999. He constructed YASHWANTRAO CHAVAN MUMBAI-PUNE EXPRESS, roads, bridges, highways, and flyovers during his tenure as the PWD Minister in Maharashtra. From the experienced of Mumbai-Pune Highway project, the PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee impressed and asked him to launch the National Highways Authority. He selected as the Chairman of the NATIONAL RURAL ROAD DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE by the Vajpayee Govt. He played an important role in Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna. He was re-elected to his MLA seat in 1996, 2002, and 2008 polls from graduates constituency from Nagpur Region. In 2004 he appointed as the State Unit President by BJP. In December 2009 he took the post of BJP President from Rajnath Singh till January 2013. He contested in 2014 General Elections and won from Nagpur Lok Sabha seat. This year he was given the Portfolio of Road, Transport and Highway Minister in Union Cabinet. In 2017 September he was given the charge of Shipping and Water Resources and River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry.
Nitin Gadkari belongs to an agriculture family so he has a great interest in agricultural activities. He promoted tools of modern technology in agriculture and projects like Solar Energy, Water management. Nitin Gadkari has some important position in his career. He was the guarding Minister of Nagpur District and founder chairman of MSRDC Ltd. from the year 1995 to 1999. He also became the Chairman of METROPOLIS BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE of Maharashtra. From the years 1995 to 1999 he became the chairman of Mining Policy Implementation Committee in Maharashtra and he also became the HIGH POWER COMMITTEE FOR PRIVATIZATION in Maharashtra.
Nitin Gadkari was in controversies in November 2011 when the dead body of poor girl Yogita Thakre[7 years] who is a daughter of poor cleaner was found inside his white Honda car. In 2012 he was in the headline because of PURTI GROUP his firm came for alleged money laundering and forgery. The cases of corruption and bribery allegations are also included in the controversies.
