Sheetal | SarkariNiti An Indian Politician Sh. Neiphiu Rio is the Current Chief Minister of Nagaland. He is the only one in the state who served as the CM for three terms in North Eastern Region. For the first time, he was elected and served as the CM from the period March 2003 to January 2008. From March 2008 to 2013 he again served as the CM for the second time and from 2013 to 2014 he became CM for the third time. He is also one of the important members of Parliament in Lok Sabha from Nagaland.
Sh. Neiphiu Rio was born on 11 November 1969 at Tuophema Kohima Nagaland. He is the son of late. Sh. Goulhoulie Rio and Smt. Kevilhou Rio. He has a brother Zhaleo Rio who is the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima. He is married to Kaisa Rio on 23 August 1975. He has five daughters and one son. He belongs to Angami Naga Tribe.
Rio completed his schooling from Baptist English School Kohima and Sainik School, Purulia, West Bengal. He studied Bachelors from St. Joseph College Darjeeling and get the Bachelor’s Degree from Arts College Kohima. At a very young age, he entered in politics and became an active student leader in his school and college days.
Rio also became the head of important organization before becoming the CM. In 1974, he appointed as the president of Youth Wing of UDF- United Democratic Fund of the District Kohima. In 1984, he was appointed as the chairman of Angami Area Council.
Rio was elected as the Congress candidate to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the constituency of Northen Angami-II. He was appointed as the Minister of sports, art & culture, school education, and higher education. From 1984 to 1987 he served as the chairman of Angami Area Council. He elected as the member of the All India Congress Committee in 1993. In 1993 he also appointed as the Minister for Works and Housing. He became the Home Minister of Nagaland in 1998. In the year 2002 Sept, he resigned from the post of Home Minister and in November he also resigned from the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He joined Naga People’s Front after resigned. It is the part of other Naga Regionalist Parties and also the branch of BJP. He formed DAN-Democratic Alliance of Nagaland under the leadership of BJP. He won the State Elections of 2003 and became the CM of Nagaland on 6 March 2003. After President ruling imposed in Nagaland, Rio was dismissed from the post of CM on 3 January 2008. He again elected to the assembly as the leader of the DAN and became the CM of Nagaland on 12 March 2008. In 2013, He was appointed as the CM for the third term. He appointed as the member of the Consultative Committee and Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region in September 2014. He became the member of the standing committee on Coal & Steel from 2014 to 2016. He also became the member of the Committee on Public Accounts from 2014 to 2018. From the year 2015 to 2018, he was the member of the committee on Agriculture.
After T.R Zeliang, he became a new CM of Nagaland in 2018. He received an honored by the MOTHER TERESSA MILLENIUM AWARD 2007 for his contribution to the politics in Kolkata. He faced controversy and has allegations of corruption in his political career. He faced a major incident when he was suddenly attacked by an armed person at Dimapur on 30 May 1995. In this attacked, his bodyguard was injured and the driver was killed.
