He was born on 16 October 1946 in Cuttack, Orissa. He is the son of Biju Patnaik and Gyan Patnaik. His father Biju Patnaik was a Politician and former Chief Minister of Orissa. Naveen Patnaik was known as a Pappu in his childhood amongst his friends and family members. He is also a Writer and has published his three books named A second paradise, A Desert Kingdom and The Garden of Life. He is also the founder of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage[INTACH]. Patnaik has a sister named Gita Mehta. She is an author and married to Ajai Singh Mehta. Patnaik is unmarried. He has one brother Prem Patnaik. He is a Businessman.
Naveen Patnaik completed his schooling at St. Joseph Convent School Cuttack. Then he moved out from Cuttack and attended Welham Boys School, Doon School in Dehradun and Lawerence School Sanawar. He is graduated in Arts from Kirori Mal College of Delhi University.
Naveen Patnaik entered into politics in 1997. He belongs to a Political Family but he stayed away from active politics. For many years he lived mostly in abroad in the US.He joined politics after the death of his father Biju Patnaik in 1996. He had followed his father’s path and joined active politics. He then founded BIJU JANTA DAL PARTY. Patnaik was elected as a member of the 11th Lok Sabha in the By-Election of Aska Constituency. He became the member of the Consultative Committee of Ministry of Steel and Mining, Member of Standing Committee on Commerce and Member of Library Committee of Parliament. Patnaik founded BJD which in alliance with BJP. He won the assembly elections in Orissa 2000. He has handled the Portfolio of the Union Minister of Mines in the cabinet of former Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He served the post for the next two years. For the first in March 2000, he was finally elected as the CM of Orissa. He has a very strong control over the administration. He played an important role in the Development, Economic Growth, and Welfare of his state Orissa. He has uplifted the condition of people below the Poverty Line. He got a victory in 2004 State Assembly Elections. His party could win the 2009 election with a victory of 14 out of 20 Lok Sabha seats and 103 out of 147 Assembly seats. He became the CM of Orissa on 21st May 2009 for the third consecutive time.
Naveen Patnaik again has a huge victory in 2014 Lok Sabha and Orissa Assembly elections. His party secures the Orissa Vidhan Sabha seats and Lok Sabha seats. Among the people of his state, Patnaik is a clean and popular politician. He is very good in others languages like Hindi English and French. He speaks Odia and written speeches in the Roman language.
Naveen Patnaik was selected as a second-best CM of India by NDTV opinion poll in 2010. He was hailed as the Most Popular Chief Minister of India by India Today-ORG-Marg Mood of the Nation Poll in 2010. He was honored by the United Nations for evacuating a million of people ahead of a tropical storm, Cyclone Philian that made a landfall on coastal Orissa in 2013. Best Administration Award by OUTLOOK 2017.
Naveen Patnaik was in controversy in 2014 when the BJD party’s MLA and MP have been accused of the involvement in CHIT FUND SCAM. They are investigated by CBI. During his time the state is rocked by MEGA MINING SCAM exposed in 2009. The M.P Shah Commissioner of Enquiry set up was submitted his report in 2013 which shows the illegal mining of at least 60,000 crores from 2003 to 2009.
Patnaik gained a great popularity by showing his efforts for the development of his state Orissa.
