With the modernization, the lifestyle of people changes so is their reading habits. Changing the trend as people want to read more and more stuff but don’t want to carry that book load with them so to solve this problem the foundation of digital libraries are laid to provide the user the access to read more and more content and at a single click. Traditional libraries have been changed to the digital form to attract the people to read more subjects and generate interest in reading not only for old people but the youngsters too. A research carried out that people have an interest in reading but either they don’t get access to those books which they want or in some cases, people don’t want to carry books.

The launch of Digital Library in India

The digital library was launched in May 2016 And it had 150,000 Approx. volumes in English at the time of launch. In the year 2017, National Digital Library of India hosted 7,203,195 items in the repository and some of the titles from them are given below:

• A Treatise on Kala-Azar, Brahmachari Upendranath in the year 1928.
• Karaka Dosabhai Framji, History of the Parsis Vol-I in the year 1884.
•  McCrindle J. W, Ancient India, in 1885.
• Aiyangar K. V. Rangaswami in 1935, Ancient Indian Polity.
•  Khwaja Ghulamus Sayyedai book named Aligarh kee taleemi tehreek.

The books mentioned above have copyright laws. Such books do not contain the day today information but instead, the information about the historical events are contained in such books and few of them are named above.

The objective of NDLI

The National Digital Library of India is a Repository that integrates contents from different Indian Institutional Repositories, with the Ministry of Human Resource and the Development Government of India has launched the National Digital Library with the contribution of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Kharagpur. This HRD’s unique initiative has more than 68 lakh books over several fields. The main aim of the project is to create a knowledge base for students belonging to all ages, explained Partha Pratim Das, a joint project investigator, and professor at the computer science and engineering department. Besides educational institutes, NDL collaborated with the Indian Space Research Organisation and the Defence Research and Development Organisation. ISRO is regularly making their educational content available online as other documents.

Languages

Sometimes language creates a bar for the user or reader as they are unable to read the books because they do not know the language so to avoid the hindrance of language the books are available to read for the user at their understandable part. The National Digital Library of India(NDLI) books are available in many languages except the regional language Hindi, English the books are also available in the Urdu and Persian languages.  There are approx. 1.7 crore of content in more than 200 languages in the NDLI.

The publications are also available in the form of pdf or quick time format.
