Mamta Banerjee is the 8th Chief Minister of West Bengal. She is the first lady of the state who hold the CM’s Office. She is popularly known as DIDI in Bengal. She was born on 5 January 1955 in Kolkatta West Bengal to a lower-middle-class family. She is Brahmin by Caste. Her father Promileshwar Banerjee was a freedom fighter and her mother Gayatri Devi was a housewife. When she was 17 years old her father died due to lack of medical treatment. She has 6 brothers. She completed her higher secondary from Deshbandu  Sishu Shikshalya in 1970. She graduated in History from Jogomaya Devi College in Kolkatta. She completed Master’s Degree from the University of Calcutta in Islamic History. She has a Degree in Law from  Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, Kolkatta. She was honored with a Doctor of Letters from Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology. She is also a Painter and Poet. She is unmarried.

Mamta Banerjee joined the Congress party in West Bengal in 1970 as a young college woman.  She became the General Secretary of the state Mahila Morcha of the Congress from 1976 to 1980. After defeating Somnath Chatterjee the veteran communist politician from Jadavpur Parliamentary Constituency in West Bengal in 1984 General Elections she became the one of the youngest parliamentary ever. She also served as a General Secretary of Indian Youth Congress.  She losing her seat in 1989  general elections in an Anti-Congress wave. She was re-elected as a Lok Sabha MP from Dakshin Bengal in 1991 General Elections. She retaining the seat in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009 elections. She was made the Union Ministry of State for Human Resources Development Youth Affairs and Sports, and Woman and Child Development in 1991.  She was discharged from her Portfolios in 1993. She established All India Trinamool Congress and then she left the Congress party in 1997. In the year 1999, she joined the BJP Led National Democratic Alliance Govt. and was designated as a Railways Ministry. She also focused on developing tourism. She associated with the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited. In total, she introduced 19 new trains that year. She presented her first Railway Budget. In 2000 She joins hands with Congress. After the Tehelka Expose she left the NDA Cabinet and joined the Congress Party for West Bengal 2001 elections. She returned to the NDA Cabinet in 2004 and held the post of Minister of Coal and Mine till the general elections of 20 May 2004. In 2005 her party lost the power of Kolkatta Municipal Corporation. The Trinamool Congress was beaten in the West Bengal Assembly Elections losing a lot of its members in 2006. She joined the hands with the Indian National Congress-led UPA[United Progressive Alliance] for the parliamentary elections 2009. INC named her for the Railway Central Minister. She stepped down from the Union Ministry of Railways after holding the chair of CM of West Bengal in May 2011. She again became the CM of West Bengal for the second consecutive time on 19 May 2016.

Mamta Banerjee was in the major controversies in December 1998. She controversially held Dogra Prashad Saroj MP of Samajwadi Party by his collar and dragged him out of Lok Sabha while he was protesting against the Women’s Reservation Bill.  She was criticized for her remark on the numbers of rapes in India. In October 2016 West Bengal Govt. imposed the ban on Durga Puja after the 25 Muslims Families raised the objections against the practice. The Govt. said that the Durga Puja hurt the sentiments of the Muslims Community as Muharram was on the same day.

In 2012, Times Magazine named her one of the hundred most INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE of the world. The Bloomberg market Magazine listed her among the most 50 Influential people in the world of Finance in Sept 2012. Mamta Banerjee achievements are as an authored over twenty books and created over 5000 oil paintings.
