The Karunya Health Scheme is an aspiring project launched by the government of Kerala to provide a health insurance for the under-privileged people within the state. The scheme was first launched on the 26th February 2012 with a pay out amount of INR. 110.62 crore to financially assist the 10,137 under-privileged civilians suffering from various chronic diseases. In the recent financial year, the government of Kerala allocated INR.250 crore towards the Karunya Health Scheme. Under this scheme, the government provides health benefits up to 2 lakhs at a minimum premium amount to the poor people who are suffering from acute ailments like Cancer, Hemophilias, Kidney, Heart diseases and for Palliative Care in Kerala. Under the scheme, the government has enrolled with various private & government hospitals to provide cashless treatment to the beneficiaries.

The Karunya Health Scheme is helpful for those people who are suffering from ailments and the cost of the treatment is unbearable to the lower and middle class people of the society. The treatment under the Karunya health scheme was initially provided through the government medical colleges & hospitals. But now private hospitals have also been empanelled in within the scheme. The funds for the scheme is being raised through the Kerala lottery and financial assistance is directly transferred to the empanelled hospitals where the patient is receiving treatment.

• For some diseases like hemophiliacs, the assistance provided is up to Rs 3 lakh.
