He was born on 2 March 1954 at Nedungulam Edappadi Salem District Madras[now Tamil Naidu]. He belonged to Gounder caste [Backward Classes].His father name is V.Karuppa Gounder. He is married.
Edappadi didn’t complete his education. He was pursuing B.Sc and dropped out of Sri Vasavi college Erode in 1976. He has listed his profession as a farmer. He had been in a Politics for a long time.
Edappadi started his political career at a very young age. In 1980 he joined ADMK. He is the only one loyalist of Jayalalitha in her political career. He became the member of the Legislative Assembly for four terms in 1989, 1991, 2011, and 2016 from the Edappadi constituency. He got defeated in 1996 assembly, 2004 Lok Sabha, 2006 Assembly Elections. He again got a ticket in 2011. After winning in 2016 Assembly Elections. He is charged as a State Minister for highways and minor ports by J.Jayalalitha. In December 2016 after the death of Jayalalitha, he is one among the minister who is recommended Sasikala Natrajan charge as a Chief Minister of Tamil Naidu. While O Pannerselvam split out from the party ADMK and Sasikala sentenced to go the jail in 2017 February. Edappadi was elected as a leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam[AIADMK]. He also expected to charge as the new CM of Tamil Naidu. On 16 Feb 2017, He became the CM of Tamil Naidu.
There was a criminal case against him about the kidnapping of some MLA.
