In an initiative towards empowering the deployment of a Renewable source of energy, the scheme regarding Biomass Power and Bagasse Co-generation is being launched by the Ministry during the year. The Programme focus towards the proficient use of biomass which is obtained from residual waste materials of various agricultural wastes and biomass. The power generated out of the same will be in huge numbers With continuous higher steam temperature and pressure and competent project configuration in new sugar mills and transformation of existing ones, 7000 MW power is projected to be generated by the biomass power and bagasse cogeneration. While only the sugar producing States like Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh got The potential for bagasse cogeneration, the total estimated biomass power potential is about 25,000 MW.
Objective
The main mission of this scheme is:
- To Support and aid all the biomass power projects with every kind of assistance possible.
To attract private and corporate firms to come forward and invest in this scheme and take this further to bigger territories along with the government support.
Eligibility criteria for permissible projects in regards to :
Type of Biomass Resources
For biomass power projects: Biomass will include all the agriculture-based waste, wood and wood products based waste, crops waste and residual.
For bagasse cogeneration projects: All the waste and residual obtained during the season
Financing Institutions
Every listed Public sector bank, Private sector bank, Financial institution, small or large cooperative banks.

Promoters
This consist of individual people, independent registered firms, Joint Sector , public sector firms ,state agencies and private and public sector investors possessing technical and managerial competence for executing Biomass Power and Bagasse cogeneration projects on BOOT / BOLT or IPP basis or State Govt. enterprise or State Govt. supported Joint Venture Company/SPV Company.
Benefits
Renewable energy source –. Biomass is obtained from all the agriculture-based waste, wood and wood products based waste, crops waste and residual and is a heavily renewable source of energy.
Reduced greenhouse gas emissions –The best part of the Biomass power generation scheme is that it won’t be generating any carbon pollutants into the environment like the fossil fuels based power generations schemes. This would automatically eradicate any greenhouse gas emissions in the open air and will help in keeping the air clean and the natural green.
Cleaner environment –While the population of the world is increasing heavily, the waste coming out of the same is also going into nature on a big scale. While most of the waste gets dumped into the rivers, streams, small gutters and so on, this would out human lives in danger with a hazardous disease in a role. With the help of Biomass power generation programme, all this waste would be used for generating power and this way it would be utilized in a better manner and would avoid any harm to the human lives and nature.
Widely available source of energy –while biomass is something which is widely available in form of residual waste and human excreta along with waste from the crops and agricultural stuff, there will not be any lack of raw materials to generate the power out of the same. While most of the waste gets dumped into the nature and gets harmful for the human lives, With the help of Biomass power generation programme, all this waste would be used for generating power and this way we would be able to handle all that waste and will be getting power in return which would be kinda gifted for free.
Challenges
- No or almost less information available on Biomass availability and its utilization to generate power
- There is no existence of an organized biomass power generation market currently in India
- While biomass is readily available in form of residual waste and human excreta along with waste from the crops and agricultural stuff, the main issue is about a collection of the same from the available points which is the biggest painful area in this scheme.
- Lack of availability of fund options and also there are not many banks and financial institutions ready to give loans on the same.

Conclusion
Biomass has always been a better alternative to the already available fossil fuels based power generation projects as the raw material required in it are readily available in form of residual waste and human excreta along with waste from the crops and agricultural stuff, The best part of the Biomass power generation scheme is that it won’t be generating any carbon pollutants into the environment like the fossil fuels based power generations schemes. This would automatically eradicate any greenhouse gas emissions in the open air and will help in keeping the air clean and the natural green. Moreover, it doesn’t have to be dependent on solar energy like in the solar power plants where if the sun is shining only then the solar panels would work and then only the power would be generated. In this case, the waste and the residual in the form of biomass is readily available and that’s the reason they won’t be many barriers while generating power out of the same.Still, the challenges are there like No or almost less information available on Biomass availability and its utilization to generate power, Lack of availability of fund options and also there are not many banks and financial institutions ready to give loans on the same. But if proper steps can be taken forward in order to bring it on board with a greater impact on better policy framework, planning, organizing, and most importantly the execution of the same, the same scheme would be working as a boon for the largely populated rural areas where its really hard for them to survive without electricity and lighting and while they cannot afford the big bills of the electricity generated out of the coal or any other source, the Biomass power programme can certainly be reagarded as a god gift to them.
